I am not a patient person. Eric & I got married a year after meeting, and it still wasn’t quick enough for me. I wrote “Where We’ve Been & Where We’re Going” the year we met (2013), impatiently waiting for our life together to begin. 10 years later, this song still confronts me. When faced with difficult questions, life has a habit of making us wait for answers. I am learning, however, to breathe through the uncomfortable journey and hold my love close as we make our way toward the next stop. We always arrive… eventually. - Ash L’Esperance, Ash & Eric
Ash & Eric’s longtime fans will know this song first appeared on The Promise is Hope’s (Ash & Eric’s former band name) debut album in 2015. The track was re-imagined and re-recorded in 2021, in the same month as Ash & Eric’s LP Sure was being self-produced at a boarding school in Western Massachusetts.
lyrics
Read me the letter that you wrote
On the 1st of January
If my memory serves me, you were out West
Thinking of the best way to tell me
If assumption serves me, like it does,
Well, I would say that we
Were wishing for the same thing that year.
So, I’ll play you this song that I wrote
On the 29th of January.
If my memory serves me, we were locked up
in my car, and it was raining
If assumption serves me, like it does
Well, I would say that we’ve been writing
On the same page
Ever since.
If time is just a construct of the mind,
A notion someone thought of just
To keep the trains on time,
Then I won’t be bogged down by
The space from then to now
I’ll hold you close,
Til we arrive.
We drive on unplowed roads these days
In our 7th January.
And as the winter passes, like it does,
Well, I have faith that we’ll be moving
At the same pace this year
And as assumption serves me, like it does,
Well, I would say that we’ve been writing
On the same page
And always will.
Yeah, we always will.
And if time is just a construct of the mind,
An empty promise someone made us
Just to keep our hearts in line
I won’t be bogged down by the space
From then to now
I will hold you close,
I will hold you close,
I will hold you close,
‘Til we arrive.
Ash & Eric have never shied away from life’s hard edges. Hailing from the gritty heart of the Industrial Revolution --
Worcester, Massachusetts -- the two find consolation in discovering the beauty of being artists in the most stubbornly independent city in the north east. Their musings reflect the hope and pain we all experience sung in voices as vulnerable and honest as their lyrics....more
