Shortly after returning home from our final tour in February 2020, our cat died suddenly. Our grief was fresh when, only a few weeks later, our world & career were turned upside down. After shaking ourselves off and accepting that our 2020 calendar would be wiped out completely, another one of our cats suddenly passed. It was a one-two-three punch that spring. “The Dogwood & I” was born in this time of intense sadness, and is a sprig of hope. Much like the lesson explored in “Autumn Hymn”, it was in the beauty of burying our little friends in a grove of flowers beneath the trees that we were provided solace in a difficult time. This song is a reminder that, in death, there is always rebirth. It is a soft New England ballad; reassuring us that once the winter passes, the spring returns with new life.
